Dear Jay Light

To be truthfully honest with you I really consider Nintendo in a league of its own. It’s not in the same class as Ps3. It’s something far different, it’s a “Gaming System” and I love it. I of coarse will get one, because I love gaming, but if you are as media savvy as I am you know that Television is going extinct in the fact that computers are now fusing with TV. About a year ago I walked into one of my friends living rooms and on his TV he had an internet browser up. He could surf EbaumsWorld and watch "House" all at the same time through one device. I thought "Wow the Future is here." Yes that device was a specially built PC but it got me thinking that hopefully there would someday be a device that was cheaper and simpler to use than a PC for that purpose. Enter the PS3. It is no longer a gaming system. Marketing sells it that way but really it isn’t. Yes it has the ability to play games but they have crossed over into another world. It’s like Matt Lester said "Future gaming systems will just become PCs." in a sense he was correct in that statement.

I don’t think that Ps3 should be compared to the Wii in anyway and I realize now that I was wrong to even mention the ps3 on your blog. They are different machines meant for different purposes. The ps3 is meant for the media room, running HD projectors, Dolby digital 7.1 surround sound and storing home videos, Photos and Music and yes playing some games, and let’s not forget bringing the World Wide Web to the TV. The wii serves one purpose and one purpose only, and it serves and will serve that purpose very well. That Purpose is gaming. The only reason Ps3 is even put beside the wii is because there is not really any other way to market that type of device at the moment.

As for X-Box, Microsoft is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Does it stay a "gaming entertainment system" and have to compete with the powerful little giant that is Nintendo. Or does it become a "home entertainment system" and have to compete with Sony which has already been doing hardcore research in this area of marketing (Refer to the PSX here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_(DVR)).

I suppose if one really must compare all three big wigs as next Generation gaming systems then think of this. Xbox has done nothing next generation. They put another G5 Mac processor in their box thus creating more horse power. It’s nothing new. Nintendo is mastering virtual game play and motion control. Playstation is trying out blue ray and the Cell processor. NEXT GENERATION STUFF!! Thus more futuristic tech for your money.

If you are still reading at this point, I thank you and I apologize for my rant. As a filmmaker it’s my job to keep track and study changes in the marketing of media technology. Thanks to this little conversation we have had I now feel compelled into possibly obtaining a doctorate.
                                                                        Daniel K Maitland

P.S. I think Nintendo will easily conquer the Xbox in the gaming system battle.

I see no reason in buying that system except for the fact that its cheap.( which may actually sway me into buying one for my apartment.) If you have and HD TV you must go with ps3 or xbox but if you want the wii but also want to unleash the full capabilities of you HDTV then just get the ps3. It can do pretty much everything the wii can do and it can allow you to surf the web, chat online, Play online games all for free and through your wirless internet connection in your house and lets not forget blue ray. Dont let me descourage you from the wii. Buy one of those they look like alot of fun and are very simple and cheap which is a good thing. If you have the HD set up at home then grab a ps3 as well so you can fully utilize all the money you have spent on HD.
